About

Satisfy your Sector-Partnered Experience (SPE) SHSM requirement with an Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE) challenge from the HPO!

This year, we are offering three different challenges:

  1. Arts Marketing Challenge: This program is suitable for both Arts and Culture and Business SHSM students. Bring students from both SHSM streams and have them collaborate, bringing their individual strengths and ways of thinking to the challenge!
  2. Music Enrichment Challenge: This program is suitable for Arts and Culture SHSM students.
  3. Development Challenge: This program is suitable for Arts and Culture and Non-Profit SHSM students. Bring students from both SHSM streams and have them collaborate, bringing their individual strengths and ways of thinking to the challenge!

24-25 SHSM Arts and Culture / Business ICE Challenge

Create an arts-based marketing plan

Students get a tour of FirstOntario Concert Hall and are given an overview of our programming and our season’s schedule. Members from our administrative staff will present students with tangible information that they can use for this challenge. This will give them a basic understanding of how our education, development, box office, and community engagement departments work.

Our marketing department will then give them a more in-depth look at the various ways in which marketing is approached in the arts sector with examples from within our marketing strategy.

Students will then be asked to create a marketing plan for a program, concert or event at the HPO. This marketing plan will include developing a target audience or demographic, doing market research and presenting their campaign.

Authentic sector-based feedback will be offered from our administrative staff for all student presentations.

24-25 SHSM Arts and Culture ICE Challenge

Plan a student enrichment day at the HPO

Students get a tour of FirstOntario Concert Hall and are given an overview of our programming and our season’s schedule. Members from our administrative staff will present students with tangible information that they can use for this challenge. This will give them a basic understanding of how our marketing, development, box office, and community engagement departments work.

Our education department will then give them a more in-depth look at our educational programming and offerings for students. They will also be presented with the logistical challenges and limitations for planning student programming.

Students will then be asked to create, cost, and devise a marketing plan for a day-long enrichment program at the HPO.  Students will be divided into 4 or 5 groups and assigned a target market audience (primary, junior, intermediate, secondary, or homeschooling).

Authentic sector-based feedback will be offered from our administrative staff for all student presentations.

24-25 SHSM Arts and Culture / Non-Profit Challenge

Devise a Development Campaign for a Target Audience

Students get a tour of FirstOntario Concert Hall and are given an overview of our programming and our season’s schedule. Members from our administrative staff will present students with tangible information that they can use for this challenge. This will give them a basic understanding of how our marketing, box office, community engagement and education departments work.

Our development team will then present students with a more in-depth look at the fundamentals of raising money in the non-profit sector. Students will learn the difference between donors, sponsors and funders. They will be given insights into development strategies for engaging and retaining patrons and converting them into donors.

Students will then be asked to devise a development campaign for a target audience.  Students will be divided into 4 groups and assigned to either sponsors, new donors, recurring donors or lapsed donors. They will be asked to design a development campaign that motivates their target audience to give (or continue giving) to the HPO.

Authentic sector-based feedback will be offered from our administrative staff for all student presentations.
