HPO’s 17-18 Season continues with a wonderful range of concerts and events designed to get the audience closer to HPO musicians and the beauty of orchestral music. Find community events in library and gallery settings, an intimate musical and visual concert, and a meaningful Remembrance Day mainstage concert featuring the world premiere of a new commission by Abigail Richardson-Schulte.
HAMILTON, ON – On Wednesday, November 8 the HPO heads to Burlington Public Library on New Street for A Musical Talk about a Canadian Revolutionary. HPO Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte, playwright Dermot Nolan and librettist Anna Chatterton explore the political career of D’Arcy McGee and the controversial story surrounding his assassination and how his fascinating story inspired their theatrical and operatic projects.
On Thursday, November 9 the HPO and HAALSA (Hamilton Association for the Advancement of Literature, Science and Art host a lecture exploring the life and circumstances that surround D’Arcy McGee’s rise and fall as well as how his story has been brought to life by through theatre and opera as demonstrated by two upcoming world premières in Hamilton: a play written by Hamilton playwright Dermot Nolan and a chamber opera created by HPO Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte and librettist and Governor General Award nominee, Anna Chatterton.
On Friday, November 10 the HPO heads to Hamilton Central Library for a lunch and learn with Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte and Principal Trumpet Michael Fedyshyn. Guests will be treated to a sneak preview of a trumpet concerto by composer John Estacio, part of the program at the November 11 mainstage concert.
On Saturday, November 11 the HPO remembers the sacrifices of those who have committed their lives to our country in the third mainstage concert of the season, Hamilton Remembers at the Great Hall at FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place). Conductor Gemma New leads the orchestra through a powerful program including the world premiere of Step Up; Sesquie for Canada 150 by Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte, Trumpet Concerto by John Estacio, featuring Principal Trumpet Michael Fedyshyn and Mozart’s soulful and moving, Requiem Mass.
On Monday, November 20 the HPO partners with One Book One Burlington to celebrate acclaimed Canadian author, Richard Wagamese and his book, Indian Horse. HPO’s String Quartet performs at this author event that includes a panel of prominent Canadians and special guests discussing Indian Horse and the legacy of this renowned Canadian writer.
On Wednesday, November 22 the 17-18 Gallery Series kicks off at Gallery on the Bay with a free 60-minute concert by HPO’s Woodwind Trio and a curator’s talk about the current exhibit, Summer Skies and Nocturnes’. Stay after the performance to explore the gallery and meet the musicians.
On Friday, November 24 – Sunday November 26 the HPO welcomes ambitious young musicians to the second Young Musicians’ Boot Camp. Lead by HPO Concertmaster, Stephen Sitarski and coached by HPO musicians, this intensive camp provides an opportunity for young musicians to receive coaching from professional musicians on exciting repertoire as they build towards a final showcase for family and friends.
On Wednesday, November 29 Conductor Gemma New invites audiences to get up close to HPO musicians and the beauty of orchestral music at the Intimate & Immersive concert in The Studio at FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place). This performance features works by Canadian and European composers and is accompanied by thought-provoking visuals by HAVN (Hamilton Audio Visual Node).
