HAMILTON, ON—On Friday, December 13 at 7:30PM and Sunday, December 15 at 3PM, HPO Music Director James Kahane leads the orchestra in an annual holiday tradition of Handel’s Messiah co-presented by Bach Elgar Choir. This year’s concert will take place on the mountain for the first time ever at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, located on 620 Rymal Rd E. From the soft beauty of the opening notes to the resounding joy of the Hallelujah Chorus, this performance promises to uplift and delight audiences during the festive season!
“The HPO is proud to continue our partnership with the Bach Elgar Choir,” says Executive Director, Kim Varian. The HPO and the Bach Elgar Choir have been long term partners over decades and presenting Handel’s Messiah together has become an extra special tradition to share with the Hamilton community.”
Joining your HPO and the BEC at this concert are four guest vocalists including, Opera Canada’s “rising star to watch” soprano Sydney Baedke, engaging mezzo-soprano Hillary Tufford and bass Alexander Dobson who is known for his musical and dramatic artistry both on opera and concert stages. Also joining this concert as a guest artist is Hamilton’s own Bud Roach, a specialist from the Baroque to the contemporary.
On Handel’s Messiah, Music Director, James Kahane says,
“Handel’s Messiah is an iconic landmark of classical
music loved by people all over the world. While the subject of the oratorio is clear, I’m fascinated by how Handel
purposefully diverts from a clear narrative format to express something more profound and metaphysical: more
than the story, Handel wanted the audience to sense a form of divine presence through his work, and it’s
particularly exciting as a conductor to work at the service of his vision and to help bring it to the audience.”
We look forward to celebrating this music with our Greater Hamilton community, as Handel’s Messiah is simply one of the most popular works in the history of music. Purchase your tickets today at HPO.org.
