HAMILTON, ON – The HPO takes a leisurely stroll through the English countryside with Gemma New and the warm, stunning sounds of Haydn, Elgar and Vaughan Williams at Haydn’s London.
The performance begins with the world premiere of New-Zealand born Canadian composer Juliet Palmer’s new work fire break, commissioned by the HPO. Palmer began the composition process by collecting field recordings in a dead cedar forest which led to her fascination with the “voice” of the trees. Toronto Symphony Orchestra Principal Oboe Sarah Jeffrey joins the HPO to perform Vaughan Williams’ Oboe Concerto. The warmth and beauty of the HPO strings are on full display in Elgar’s Serenade.
We close the concert with Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, the last of the composer’s London Symphonies. Before the concert, join Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte for the free Inside the Music: Pre-Concert Talk featuring Music Director Gemma New, guest artist Sarah Jeffrey and composer Juliet Palmer.
