HAMILTON, ON – The musicians of the HPO return to FirstOntario Concert Hall for our first Mainstage performance of the 21-22 Season, Beethoven’s Eighth. This concert has a live audience as well as online viewing through livestream and on-demand.

Concertmaster of the HPO, Stephen Sitarski takes the podium as guest conductor for this concert featuring works that evoke the beauty of nightfall. The program begins with Bruckner’s bright and majestic Three Pieces for Orchestra with soaring melodies from the strings section and solos by oboe and bassoon. Canadian tenor Lawrence Wiliford joins Principal Horn Jessie Brooks to perform Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, a setting of poems on the calm and mystery of night, which create a poignant and haunting atmosphere. Manitoba-based composer of Cree decent Andrew Balfour draws on the stars and northern lights for inspiration in his piece Kiwetin-acahkos (North Star) Fanfare for the peoples of the North. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 offers energy and invention, closing the evening with the composer’s light-hearted side. This concert will be approximately one hour in length with no intermission.

With the return of live audiences in our 21-22 Season, the HPO has adopted an enhanced health and safety policy in an effort to curb the continuing spread of COVID-19 in accordance with public health policy in the province of Ontario. All guests and patrons 12 years of age and older are required to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and show a valid photo ID. This policy also applies to HPO musicians, staff, volunteers and contractors.
