HAMILTON, ON – Gemma New is reuniting with the HPO to bring our Mainstage season to a close at our last concert of 21-22, Mozart and Prokofiev, on Friday, June 24 at 7:30pm at FirstOntario Concert Hall! HPO Principal Clarinet Dominic Desautels is in the spotlight as this concert’s soloist in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.
The piece that coincidentally kicked off Dominic’s professional performance career as a 21-year-old soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, he circles back to his origins with this quintessential work of the clarinet repertoire showcasing the instrument’s lyricism and virtuosity. Alexina Louie’s Music for a Celebration launches this concert on a high note, while the program closes with Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, a lighthearted and eccentric work modeled on the style of Mozart and Haydn. Among these works, we will also hear the long-awaited live premiere of 20-21 Composer Fellow Matthias McIntire’s Yangon Connection, a piece inspired by the composer’s travels.
“We are so delighted to celebrate this successful 21-22 season with our Music Director Gemma New at the helm for our Mainstage closing night,” says HPO Executive Director Kim Varian. “There is a special bond between Gemma and our musicians, and we are reminded just how lucky we are to have her strong leadership, bold vision and impeccable skill in our organization.”
At Mozart and Prokofiev, we will reintroduce intermission as well as the Inside the Music: Pre-Concert Talk beginning at 6:30pm. June 24 will also be the last opportunity for patrons to purchase tickets for our 2022 Spring Raffle, as our winner will be announced that evening.
