Biography

Evan Mitchell is one of Canada’s most innovative and imaginative conductors, an artist equally at home conducting symphonic masterworks, opera, pops, contemporary music, and film scores live in concert. He has been consistently acclaimed for curating thoughtful, incisive, and affecting musical performances. He is currently the music director of the Kingston Symphony as well as the Thunder Bay Symphony.

Mr. Mitchell has acted as a cultural ambassador on an extensive tour to Asia, won the coveted Jean-Marie Beaudet national prize for conducting, given concerts to over a half-million children and students, created the celebrated Harmon in Space web series during the pandemic (www.harmoninspace.com), premiered over 30 new Canadian works, sold out several entire seasons of Masterworks concerts, and created a host of digital and in-person initiatives for audience members to connect with orchestral music on their own terms.

He is proud to have partnered with countless world-class artists such as the Barenaked Ladies, Sarah Slean, Judy Collins, Pink Martini, Royal Wood, Whitehorse, Patrick Watson, Johnny Reid, Holly Cole, and the legendary Omara Portuondo.

Mr. Mitchell has a repertoire of over 30 film scores live in concert including all eight Harry Potter films, and is considered one of the nation’s pre-eminent conductors of film music live to picture.
