Though there are many things left to enjoy in 2019, the HPO is looking ahead to a busy New Year with our annual Composer Festival in January celebrating the incomparable Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

HAMILTON, ON – Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte kicks off our Composer Festival with three presentations of her talk Tchaikovsky: His Life and Music. Richardson-Schulte presents the talk and piano demonstration at Dundas’ Amica retirement residence on January 10, at the Burlington Public Library Central Branch on January 15 and at the Hamilton Public Library Central Branch on January 15.

On January 14 we partner with The Hamilton Association for the Advancement of Literature, Science and Art (HAALSA) for The Influence of Tchaikovsky. Richardson-Schulte hosts this fascinating exploration of Tchaikovsky’s music and his victorious struggle for acceptance in a newly created and conservative Russian musical scene.

The Composer Festival continues January 16 with our Tchaikovsky Happy Hour at Shawn & Ed Brewing Co. in Dundas. Our Brass Quintet performs with Richarsdson Schulte hosting and beer tastings. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Our Seniors’ Talk & Tea returns January 17 with Richardson-Schulte sharing the stories and music of Tchaikovsky before heading into the concert hall for a sneak peak at an HPO rehearsal. Our Mainstage performance Triumphant Tchaikovsky on January 18 presents some of the composer’s greatest works with guest artist Jon Kimura Parker performing Piano Concerto No. 1.

Our Composer Festival culminates in the annual HPO Pro-Am Jam featuring local amateur musicians performing a few Tchaikovsky classics alongside HPO musicians right on the stage of FirstOntario Concert Hall. This event immediately follows our Triumphant Tchaikovsky concert on January 18.

We end the month with an UpBeat performance for children on Friday, January 24 at 3pm at the Dundas Branch of the Hamilton Public Library featuring our String Quartet in an exploration of music in motion.
