In this new web series, HPO Music Director Gemma New revisits performances of works in our 20-21 Season with composers and HPO musicians. Gemma and featured guests provide insight into the creation and interpretation of the pieces featured in the HPO’s online concerts, sharing their inspiration and artistic process.
Episode 1: Leslie Newman and Composer Iman Habibi discuss Surge for solo flute
The first installment in this series features Gemma in conversation with HPO Principal Flute Leslie Newman and Iranian-Canadian composer Iman Habibi. The three discuss Iman’s work, Surge for solo flute, which was given its Canadian premiere by Leslie during the HPO online concert Whimsical Woodwinds, which premiered in October 2020.
Episode 2: Bethany Bergman and Vincent Ho discuss Morning Song for solo violin
This episode features Gemma in conversation with HPO Principal Second Violin Bethany Bergman and Canadian composer Vincent Ho. The three discuss Vincent’s work, Morning Song for solo violin, which Bethany performed on the HPO online concert Reflections from Russia, which premiered in November 2020.
Episode 3: Juliet Palmer on fire break
This episode features Gemma in conversation with New Zealond-Canadian composer Juliet Palmer. The two discuss Juliet’s orchestral work, fire break, which was to be premiered at an HPO Mainstage concert in March 2020 but was unfortunately cancelled. The HPO presents a digital premiere of the work, and Juliet and Gemma discuss inspiration for the work and Juliet’s creative process.
