FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAMILTON, ON—The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) and Music Director Gemma New present the latest multidisciplinary concert experience, Intimate & Immersive: In the Groove on Thursday, May 23 at 7:30pm at the Cotton Factory (270 Sherman Avenue North).

This concert marks the HPO’s first performance at the Cotton Factory, a historic former textile mill that now serves as a space for artists to convene. In this casual and inviting format, concert-goers are seated around the orchestra only feet from the musicians. Artists from the Hamilton Audio Visual Node (HAVN) augment the space with evocative art installations.
This program features vibrant compositions by trendsetting contemporary composers. Soprano Carla Huhtanen performs emerging American composer Christopher Cerrone’s The Pieces that Fall to Earth, a moving work commissioned for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The concert highlights Canadian new music, including Zosha DiCastri’s colourful Cortège and Paul Frehner’s wild God Save the Human Cannonball. With exciting pieces that groove in the off-beats, this concert is a must-see for new music aficionados and first-timers alike.

This concert also marks the world premiere of Chamber Dances by HPO Composer Fellow Liam Ritz. This performance is the culmination of the HPO Composer Fellowship, a six-month artistic and professional mentorship program. The fellowship is generously supported by the RBC Foundation through the RBC Emerging Arts Project.

The evening opens with a set by local band and former HPO Indie Series collaborator Illitry. Headed by Hamilton Arts Award winner Troy Withrow, Illitry’s styles of ambient and electronic music set the experimental and immersive mood of the evening.

Supported by Incite Foundation for the Arts, SOCAN Foundation and Bob and Peggy Savage, Intimate & Immersive, In the Groove marks the final concert of the 18-19 Season, and gives new audiences an opportunity to experience the HPO in a unique, casual environment. Concertgoers can mingle, enjoy a drink and speak with the conductor and musicians throughout the evening.
