FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAMILTON, ON – The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra’s Composer Fellowship Program is aimed at connecting early career composers with professionals in the orchestral world to support their education and development as artistic leaders in their field and community. Selected emerging composers develop their artistic voice in a professional setting, working with HPO musicians, staff, Music Director Gemma New and Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte to nurture and develop new skills in the commission of a new orchestral work.

In this second iteration of the program, two Composer Fellows will be selected: one 25 years or under and one 26 or older. In addition to mentorship and the opportunity to write for the HPO, the Composer Fellows will receive an honorarium for the commission and an archival recording of their work.

This fellowship consists of six months of artistic and professional development throughout the 19-20 Season. Each of the Composer Fellows will be commissioned to write a piece for the HPO to premiered at the Intimate & Immersive concert series. The new work by the Composer Fellow who is 25 years or under will be premiered at Earthshine on March 26 at 7:30pm, while the premiere of the work by the Composer Fellow who is 26 years or over will be premiered at Dragon Unfolding on May 21 at 7:30pm.

This program offers a robust educational experience for new generation artists, so they may be exposed to multiple aspects of the creative process and business of orchestral composing. The program is designed in collaboration with the Canadian Music Centre (CMC) and is supported by the RBC Emerging Artists Project. Applications for the program remain open at the HPO website until October 21, 2019.

In the 18-19 Season, Toronto-based composer Liam Ritz acted as Composer Fellow. His piece Chamber Dances premiered at our May 2019 Intimate & Immersive: In the Groove performance at The Cotton Factory.
