HAMILTON, ON – HPO Music Director Gemma New revisits performances of works in our 20-21 Season with composers and HPO musicians in a new limited video series hosted on YouTube, In Conversation with Gemma New. In this series, Gemma and featured guests provide insight into the creation and interpretation of the pieces featured in the HPO’s online concerts, sharing their inspiration and artistic process.

The first installment in this series features Gemma in conversation with HPO Principal Flute Leslie Newman and Iranian-Canadian composer Iman Habibi. In this video Gemma leads a conversation about Iman’s work, Surge for solo flute, which was given its Canadian premiere by Leslie during the HPO online concert Whimsical Woodwinds, which premiered in October 2020.

Future episodes in this limited series feature guests including composers Vincent Ho and Juliet Palmer, and HPO Principal Second Violin Bethany Bergman. This limited series is an opportunity for HPO audiences to connect with Gemma New and learn more about how the HPO’s first online season came together and the living composers whose work is featured.
