FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAMILTON, ON – The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, in partnership with A Different Drummer Books, is thrilled to announce the latest edition of the Literary Series featuring acclaimed Hamilton author Gary Barwin and his book, Yiddish for Pirates. This unique concert experience takes place Thursday, November 29 at 7:30PM at the Studio at FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place).

Gary Barwin and HPO musicians present a captivating performance that combines words and music. This engaging event includes Barwin reading from his novel, Yiddish for Pirates, and music by the HPO String Quartet. Audience members will experience the rich musicality of Barwin’s powerful storytelling and live music will underscore the narrative.

Winner of the Stephen Leacock Medal for Literary Humour and Canadian Jewish Literary Award, shortlisted for the Giller Prize and nominated for the Governor General’s Award for LiteratureYiddish for Pirates is a hilarious, swashbuckling yet powerful tale of pirates, buried treasure and a search for the Fountain of Youth.

“Few books manage to treat the subjects of identity, conflict, home and honour so fully and so movingly…Yiddish for Pirates illuminates an interior life shaped by alarming and extraordinary circumstances but still, essentially, guided by love and a rigorous moral code…Yiddish for Pirates has an unmatched spryness in both thought and language.” – S. Bear Bergman, Globe and Mail

“What an accomplishment! What an imagination! The wit, the wordplay, and the subversive humour make this a thoroughly original and delightful novel.”  – Lauren B. Davis, Scotiabank Giller Prize-nominated author.

The Literary Series is a powerful program which highlights the beautiful ways in which literature and music intertwine to enrich our lives.
