This month we present the Mainstage concert Cameron Crozman Plays Dvořák on November 12, featuring one of Canada’s biggest cello stars, Cameron Crozman. Later in the month, Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra musicians perform their first concert of the season on November 26. We also look forward to a Talk & Tea on November 11 when community members join us at FirstOntario Concert Hall to learn about the works being performed the following day.
On Friday, November 11 at 2pm, Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte hosts Talk & Tea, sharing the history behind the composers and works performed at Cameron Crozman Plays Dvořák, before inviting participants into the concert hall to watch part of a rehearsal. This talk will focus on Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, as well as Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5. One of our Talk and Tea audience members and frequent participant in our annual Community Recital, Grace Fioravanti, will join Abigail in sharing piano demonstrations.
On Saturday, November 12, we are delighted to welcome many members of Canada’s military to this season’s third Mainstage concert, Cameron Crozman Plays Dvořák. The second half of our concert is a ‘musicians’ choice’ work, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, written as an uplifting celebration of human spirit from the throws of WWII. The young and highly accomplished Alexander Prior, who was Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor from 2017 until the end of their 21-22 season, joins us as guest conductor. Cameron Crozman, named “Canada’s next big cello star” by CBC music, is the evening’s soloist performing Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. Cameron last performed with the HPO and Conductor Gemma New at Gemma Conducts Brahms, our opening night concert in 2018.
To open the concert, we have a unique work by Canadian composer Vincent Ho titled Earthbeat, written for the symphonic ballet True North. This was a collaboration between five Canadian composers commissioned by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary. HPYO violinists join our musicians to perform part of Earthbeat.
The concert begins at 7:30pm but audience members are encouraged to come early for the Inside The Music: Pre-Concert Talk at 6:30pm, where Abigail Richardson-Schulte will interview our soloist and conductor about the music being performed.
On Saturday, November 26, HPYO showcases the repertoire they’ve been working on during their Fall term. They will perform works by masters like Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and more. This will be our new HPYO Music Director David Willms’ first HPYO concert. Musicians’ families and the public are all welcome to attend this concert and support these talented young HPYO musicians.
