Hamilton, ON – On Tuesday, November 6, HPO continues its Community Collaboration with the Burlington Public Library (Central branch). On Wednesday, November 7, HPO’s String Quartet heads to Gallery on the Bay for a chamber concert featuring the music of Ravel and Debussy. Hosted by Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte, this 60-minute concert begins with a curator’s presentation of the gallery’s current exhibition.
On Friday, November 9, the Seniors’ Talk and Tea series presents From Broadway to Tin Pan Alley. At this educational and engaging event, guests enjoy a late morning tea and treat, discover the stories behind the composers on the mainstage, and go behind-the-scenes to an HPO rehearsal in the Great Hall at FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place). Hosted by HPO Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte.
On Saturday, November 10, Music Director Gemma New, leads vivacious and popular music of the early 1900s. Tenor Doug LaBrecque brightens the stage with his impeccable vocal stylings and flair for the music of early Broadway, Tin Pan Alley and golden age jazz, and a special appearance by the Regimental Band of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. Immediately following the mainstage concert, the HPO presents a special event at the Studio at FirstOntario Concert Hall. Strike Up the Band is a nod to the post war era of the 1920s when big bands and popular dances like the Charleston were all the rage. Featuring a performance by HPO’s Principal Trumpet, Michael Fedyshyn, dancers from the Hammer Hoppers all in support of HPO programs for children and seniors in the community.
On Thursday, November 29, HPO hosts the Literary Series at the Studio at FirsOntario Concert Hall. This event features Gary Barwin’s Yiddish for Pirates. At this event authors share their works with HPO musicians in performance to underscore their narrative. Shortlisted for the Giller Prize and nominated for the Governor General’s Award for Literature, Yiddish for Pirates is a hilarious, swashbuckling yet powerful tale of pirates, buried treasure and a search for the Fountain of Youth.
