The HPO’s 16-17 Season continues with the celebration of a man widely considered to be the greatest composer of all time. Ludwig van Beethoven is celebrated in events throughout the city with the Beethoven Festival culminating in our mainstage concert Brilliant Beethoven.
BURLINGTON, ON – HPO’s Beethoven Festival kicks off at Burlington Public Library. On Thursday, January 12 at 2pm, Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte hosts a Beethoven Lecture and introduces the audience to the man behind the masterful music.
On Friday, January 13 at 7:30pm, HPO celebrates the life of Beethoven with HPO Movie Night: Immortal Beloved. Explore the life and loves of the legendary Ludwig van Beethoven in this critically acclaimed film starring Gary Oldman and Isabella Rossellini. Enjoy a live performance of a Beethoven Piano Sonata as part of the pre-film feature.
On Sunday, January 15 at 3pm, HPO returns to Dundas with the Beethoven Community Recital. Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte hosts an open-mic style event to celebrate the creativity and passion of amateur musicians. Soloists and ensembles perform Beethoven or Beethoven-inspired work for an audience of friends and colleagues. This community event concludes in a performance by Associate Concertmaster Lance Ouellette.
On Tuesday, January 17 at 5:30pm, the young professional crowd gathers at The Baltimore House for Beer-thoven Happy Hour. HPO’s String Quartet performs works influenced and written by Beethoven as guests enjoy specialty brews inspired by the German composer.
On Wednesday, January 18 at 7:30pm, HPO partners with HAALSA and McMaster’s Department of Family Medicine to present a fascinating Beethoven-inspired lecture. The Deafness of Beethoven: Tragedy or Destiny? at David Braley Health Sciences Centre addresses the ultimate alienating element of Beethoven that is still studied today. HPO’s Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte co-hosts this talk with Dr. Jason Archibald, Associate Professor Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery.
The Beethoven Festival concludes at FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) with Brilliant Beethoven on January 21 at 7:30pm. Experience the musical landscape that inspired the great Ludwig van Beethoven. Haydn’s Symphony No. 16, a programming suggestion by our very own HPO musicians, sets the tone for future works of his students Mozart and Beethoven. Then, Beethoven’s radiant Piano Concerto No. 2 comes to life at the hands of German Pianist Hinrich Alpers.
Join us after Brilliant Beethoven for the Pro-Am Jam immediately following the concert. Professional and amateur musicians of all ages and levels are invited to the FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) mezzanine to play Beethoven’s momentous Fifth Symphony alongside HPO musicians. Participants must be ticket holders to the Brilliant Beethoven concert and provide their own instrument.
