HAMILTON, ON – This May, the HPO offers schools two engaging online student concert experiences, Adventures in Music for elementary students and Music History Rewind for secondary students. Each concert features HPO ensembles and soloists in performances of chamber music ranging from the Baroque era to contemporary works. Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte guides students through significant moments in Western classical music history as concert host with a special introduction from Music Director Gemma New.

In Adventures in Music, elementary students will learn about the places and cultures that have influenced composers throughout history, as well as influences today. In Music History Rewind, secondary students will learn about the societal and political forces that shape music and explore with Abigail the ways that a composer’s work may reflect their heritage, experiences and dreams.

“We are very happy to be able to present our student concert experience in an online format for young people in our community,” said HPO Executive Director Kim Varian. “Education is at the heart of our mission at the HPO and with the disruption of in-person activities and experiences, it is more important than ever that we find new meaningful ways to share music with students.”

Works featured in these concerts include Reena Esmail’s Darshan for solo violin performed by Suhashini Arulanandam, Dai Fujikura’s Secret Leaves performed by Principal Bassoon Eric Hall, Mozart’s Oboe Quartet and Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus performed by the Brass Quintet.

Adventures in Music and Music History Rewind feature performances recorded by Banko Media as part of our 20-21 Hamilton Series. Recordings took place at McMaster University’s L.R. Wilson Hall. Both concerts are now on sale at staginghpo.wpengine.com/schools-teachers. Concerts will be viewable by schools on-demand beginning May 25 through June 8.
