Announcing a full-day of symphony-themed fun with Marz Homes Family Concert Experience: Pinocchio.

HAMILTON, ON – The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) is excited to announce the latest edition the Marz Homes Family Concert Series. This year’s family concert experience features Pinocchio on Saturday, February 3 at the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre at Mohawk College. This event is a day of fun and music with music-themed activities from 11am and a one-hour full orchestra concert at 2pm.

The concert is conducted by Daniel Warren while narrator Suzie Sunshine regales the beloved story of Pinocchio as part of this a one-hour family concert. The concert features symphony favourites such as: Saint-Saëns’ The Swan and The Elephant from Carnival of the Animals, Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture, and Gandolfi’s Pinocchio’s Adventures in Funland.

Families have the opportunity to purchase a full-day pass or tickets to the concert only. Kids and their parents can get started on the festivities as early as 11am and enjoy some of the following hands-on activities around Mohawk College:

Make your own Puppet and Music Maker with the Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB)
With the help from our friends at AGB, kids can make and take home their very own Pinocchio and music makers! Using craft supplies, kids can embellish and assemble their own puppet and music maker.

Instrument Petting Zoo with An Instrument for Every Child
Get an up close and personal look at the instruments of an orchestra. Kids have the opportunity to hold and play a series of orchestral instruments and learn more about how they make their unique sounds.

Name that Tune with ArtPOP Ensemble
Test your musical knowledge at this fun and interactive jam session. Musicians will play excerpts from popular songs for the audience to “name that tune.”

Found Sound Station with HPO Composer-in-Residence
HPO Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte demonstrates how sounds can be created with mundane objects around the house.  Hear what a stove rack sounds like, and learn how you can make music with a turkey baster!

Musical Storytime with Suzie Sunshine and HPO Composer-in-Residence
Have a seat and enjoy a story as Suzie Sunshine and Abigail Richardson-Schulte read from a series of classic children’s stories.

Hear what patrons have said about the Marz Homes Family Concert Experience:

“The best part was watching my five grandchildren enjoying themselves at experimenting and trying new instruments.”

“[My son] also loved the concert. He had me get a recording of In the Hall of the Mountain King and has been listening to it ever since.”

“In the words of my seven year old grandnephew – the day was awesome!”

This is the second of two family concerts in HPO’s 17-18 Season and the third annual Family Concert Experience which includes a day of music-themed activities before the one-hour family concert.
