Venue

The Great Hall at FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) is an internationally acclaimed theatre with a reputation for outstanding acoustics. Opened in 1973, FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) was designed by architect Trevor P. Garwood-Jones and acousticians Russell Johnson Associates of New York. FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) is the official home of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and remains the hall’s primary tenant. In addition to classical music, FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) features numerous touring productions throughout the year including musicians, bands, comedians and musical theatre. The Great Hall seats 1,985 in total for Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra concerts.

Directions and Parking

There is limited underground parking available at FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) accessible by Summers Lane or King Street. Additionally the hall is well serviced by numerous public parking lots within the immediate area.

The MacNab Street Transit Terminal is located immediately east of FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place). The following HSR bus lines stop within one block of FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place): 1 King, 2 Barton, 3 Cannon, 4 Bayfront, 5 Delaware, 6 Aberdeen, 7 Locke, 10 B-Line, 21 Upper Kenilworth, 22 Upper Ottawa, 23 Upper Gage, 24 Upper Sherman, 25 Upper Wentworth, 26 Upper Wellington, 27 Upper James, 33 Sanatorium, 34 Upper Paradise, 35 College, 51 University, 52 Dundas.

The following Burlington Transit bus lines stop within one block of FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place): Route 1 Plains, Route 101 Plains Express.

Guests of GO Transit buses can request to stop directly outside of FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) at the Summers Lane stop. Guests of GO Transit trains are let off 500m away from FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) at the GO Station.

From Toronto

  • QEW to Highway 403 west
  • take the Main St. East Exit and follow directional signs to FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place), (1/2 block east of Bay Street).

 

From Guelph

  • Highway 6 South to Highway 403 west Hamilton
  • Take the Main St. East Exit and follow directional signs to FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place), (1/2 block east of Bay Street).

 

From Cambridge

  • Highway 8 East to Hamilton, Highway 8 becomes Main Street in Dundas
  • Directional signs are posted.
  • Follow Main St. East to Summers Lane (1/2 block east of Bay Street). Directional signs are posted.

 

From Brantford

  • Highway 403, take the Main St. East Exit
  • FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) follow Main St. East to Summers Lane (1/2 block east of Bay Street). Directional signs are posted within the city.

 

From Niagara / Buffalo

  • (approx. 86 km to Hamilton) QEW Hamilton to Highway 403 west Hamilton
  • FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) take the Main St. East Exit and follow directional signs to either facility, (1/2 block east of Bay Street)

 

Patrons Services

Medical Emergencies and First Aid

  • A medical professional is present at all HPO concerts.  Please contact an usher if this service is required.

 

Concert etiquette

  • Please refrain from quiet conversations, whispers, talking, singing, coughing, humming, tapping to the music, turning pages, leaning forward in your seat and unwrapping cellophane-wrapped candies during the concert.  These activities disturb the performers as well as other audience members.
  • Please turn off your cell phones, pagers, watch alarms and any other device that makes noise before entering the Great Hall.
  • Cameras and other recording devices are prohibited in the auditorium, but please feel free to take photos in the lobby area.

 

Latecomers

  • Out of respect to all patrons and performers and to maintain musical continuity, latecomers will be admitted into the auditorium by an usher during an appropriate break in the performance.
  • Patrons who leave the Great Hall during the performance will be re-admitted during a suitable break.

 

Children

  • Children aged five and older may attend any HPO concert with a ticket purchase
  • As with any patrons, ushers will ask parents to take disruptive children out of the auditorium.
  • We regret that we cannot admit children younger than five years of age into an HPO concert at FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place).

 

Box Office

  • The HPO Box Office (10 MacNab St. S.) is open on weekdays from 9:30am – 4:30pm.  Tickets may also be purchased 24 hours a day online at hpo.org.
  • The FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) Box Office (1 Summers Lane) is open three hours prior to HPO concerts.
  • Tickets may also be purchased at the FirstOntario Box Office (101 York Blvd.) weekdays from 9am – 5pm and Saturday from 9:30am – 1:30pm.

 

Special Needs Services

  • Wheelchair accessible seating is rear orchestra accessible by ramp or elevator and is available by calling the HPO Box Office at 905-526-7756.
  • Washrooms and facilities are fully accessible.
  • Special arrangements for the blind and visually impaired can be made for most performances.  Patrons with a valid CNIB card may purchase one full-price seat and receive a complimentary seat for their companion by calling the HPO Box Office at 905-526-7756.
  • For patrons with hearing aids, Sennheiser Assistive Listening headphones are available at FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) at no charge.  Please contact an usher if this service is required.

 

Bars and Concessions

  • There are bars located on the orchestra level, mezzanine level and first balcony of FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place).  Pre-order service allows patrons to pre-order and pay for their intermission drinks without having to stand in line.
  • Only bottled water is permitted in the Great Hall for HPO concerts unless explicitly stated otherwise.
