HPO Premieres a Double Bill of Theatre and Opera Posted on November 21, 2017 2 Comments FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HAMILTON, ON—The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) is thrilled to announce a unique and intriguing way to experience the HPO this season. On Thursday, December 7 at 7:30pm at the Studio (FirstOntario Concert Hall, 1 Summers Lane) the HPO presents McGee – an evening of theatre and opera highlighting the life and assassination of D’Arcy McGee, a former Irish revolutionary who became a father of the Canadian Confederation. “Artists today are still inspired by D’Arcy McGee’s fascinating and at times controversial story as demonstrated by two upcoming world premières in Hamilton,” says HPO Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte. This celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial features the new chamber opera Shot, written by Hamilton librettist and nominee for the Governor General’s Award for Drama, Anna Chatterton and HPO Composer-in-Residence and Dora Mavor Moore Award recipient for Best New Opera, Abigail Richardson-Schulte. This chamber opera was inspired by McGee’s life and death and the play, It’s Morning Now, by Hamilton playwright Dermot Nolan. Supported by Ontario 150, City of Hamilton and incite foundation for the arts, the evening opens with scenes from the play It’s Morning Now followed by the new opera, Shot and features Canadian singers from COSI (Centre for Opera Studies in Italy) guided by Artistic Director Darryl Edwards and accompanied by a chamber ensemble of the HPO. This dramatic evening brings opera back to Hamilton and highlights this important part of our nation’s history.
