HAMILTON, ON—The Board of Directors is thrilled to announce the renewal of Gemma New’s contract as Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra through the 2020/21 Season.
“As an organization, and as a community, we have come to appreciate what a special talent we have in Gemma and are delighted that we will continue to benefit from Gemma’s artistic vision and leadership as well as her rapidly growing international reputation,” says Janice Locke, Chair of the Board of Directors. “Since joining us in spring of 2015, we have recognized Gemma’s vision in programming ambitious and rewarding works for the Mainstage and contributing greatly to our outreach programs across the region.”
Gemma joined the HPO as music director, following a rigorous international search, with a contract that would have had her with the HPO until June 2018.
“It has been a true joy and inspiration to work with the musicians and staff of the HPO these past two seasons,” says Gemma. “This excellent orchestra is admirably central to Hamilton’s arts culture and community. I look forward to leading the HPO’s artistic vision for these future seasons.”
Gemma made her mainstage debut with the HPO in February 2016, in a concert featuring Canadian pianist Katherine Chi playing Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1. Since taking on the role, she’s been commended for her artistically rich, innovative and multi-disciplinary programming both on the mainstage and in our outreach programming.
In addition to her role as Music Director of the HPO, Gemma also holds the post of Resident Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and keeps a busy guest conducting schedule across North America, in addition to upcoming engagements in Europe.
